Noteworthy events happen every day. Years later we look back and realize it; then begin calling them historic. Once such event recently took place here in Lyonsdale/Lyons Falls.
Mrs. Lena Yancey, who has owned and operated “The MANSION” for over 23 years has decided it is time to turn over this beautiful property to the next caretaker. Mrs. Yancey has been one of almost 10 different owners since the direct decedents of the Lyon family sold it off in the 1960s.
The Lyon family settled the land in the early 1800’s and twice built on the same site. The stately stone home of Lyman R. Lyon was built circa 1829 but later destroyed by fire in 1884.
One of Mr. Lyon’s three daughters, Florence Merriam spent 6 years rebuilding, beginning in 1889. Mrs. Merriam named it “Florissante”. It has been more recently been known as “Ski Lodge” and/or “The Mansion”.
Lyonsdale and Lyons Falls were so named because of the Lyon family influence on the region.
As of December 2017. The new caretaker, of direct Lyon decent, took possession and occupancy. After some T.L.C. and a few systems upgrades the new caretaker, the great, great grandson of Lyman R Lyon and great, great grandnephew of Florence Merriam, will announce his plans.
“Florissante, The Mansion” so begins a new chapter in its historic existence here in Lewis county. Special thanks to the Yancey Family. Brenda of Homes Realty and Beth Roberts and Ed Benn of Benn Realty.
